“Without mathematics, there's nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.” ~Shakuntala Devi, Writer & Mental Calculator

A history of trauma and a sense of disconnection defines most of our “at-risk” students.  By providing mentors that set realistic pathways with clear and consistent guardrails, and reassurance that going off the path does not destroy the dream, these students will move forward.

Lessons are designed to foster trust in our “at-risk” students, especially, helping them learn to work as a team, taking initiative with individual projects and experimenting with new techniques and not being afraid to fail as they learn. By uplifting the troubled students, we can pave a more direct path to future success, confidence and commitment.

Students learned about the essential ingredients of a rocket:  conservation of momentum, a propellant with a fancy nozzle and a source of energy.  Armed with this information, they build their own rocket ship and tested it with success.

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a constructivist instructional approach where students are engaged in meaningful inquiry of personal interest to them and where collaboration and personalized learning are emphasized. Research confirms that PBL is an effective and enjoyable way to learn and develop deeper learning competencies required for success in college, career and civic life.
