Sixth-eighth Grade C.T.E. Programs - S.T.E.M.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” - W.B. Yeats, Poet

"Nobody can build a great Career and Technical Education (CTE) alone, it takes the continuous support of a strong partnership with the local business/industry sector. In order to build and sustain
strong CTE courses, the business/industry sector must be the “North Star” to help direct our program direction in order to
maintain integrity. Cleveland City Schools CTE Department is very fortunate to have a vast array of business/industry partners who diligently invest in our students, teachers, and programs. Not only
do they advise in the direction of existing programs, they also advise and direct in new potential emerging CTE course
opportunities. Our business/industry partners often support our CTE classrooms with specialized speakers who are professional in their career in order to inspire and direct students."

~Renny Whittenbarger, C.T.E. Supervisor for Cleveland City Schools

S.T.E.M. uses core subjects to combine the design concepts, philosophies and teaching methodologies that are integral to the C.T.E. Program.  We are all about doing...hands on learning is the way we bring creativity, collaborative learning and engaging concepts into our classrooms.

Guest Speakers & MENTORS

Our CTE Engineering teacher works with TTU to bring university engineering students to his classroom for demonstrations and simulations of engineering in real-world situations. This connectivity to a post-secondary institution permits students to obtain a greater understanding of career exploration and its possibilities in the field of engineering. Our local radio station visits with our communication students to stimulate interest in all aspects of radio.  These scheduled events were cancelled this year due to Covid but will be rescheduled as soon as we are able.

"Youscience" career testing

What do you want to be when you grow up? Students finding possible future careers! Doctors? Scientists? Carpenters? YouScience is helping students find the perfect fit for their personal strengths!  Every student at CMS that has a CTE class is given a YouScience account where they can take a career interest survey, and a career aptitude assessment to help determine their ideal field of study.  The website offers a wide range of information about careers, with videos that specify current job and educational requirements, potential income and can be updated by the student as they move through the different grades.  Every C.T.E. student has access from middle school through high school.

Elementary students from all Cleveland City Schools come to visit Cleveland Middle. These 5th graders follow CMS students around to their classes to get the “middle school experience” for one day. These visitors get to sit through CTE classes and learn more about the programs we offer at CMS - Business Communications, STEM, and Medical Science.

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a constructivist instructional approach where students are engaged in meaningful inquiry of personal interest to them and where collaboration and personalized learning are emphasized. Research confirms that PBL is an effective and enjoyable way to learn and develop deeper learning competencies required for success in college, career and civic life.
